Aaron Donald's return to the Los Angeles Rams has the chance to be special.

Shortly after the news broke that Donald was returning to the Rams on a one-year, $20 million contract, the Rams shared a letter from Donald to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announcing his return. The body of Donald's letter was concise:

"I'm back," Donald wrote.

That was it.

While efficiently getting the point across, Donald's message is a not-so-veiled homage to the greatest athlete comeback in sports history.

In 1995, Michael Jordan sent a fax to media through his agent, David Stern announcing his comeback to the Chicago Bulls following a 17-month hiatus from basketball to pursue professional baseball.

Like Donald's on Sunday, the body of Jordan's message read, simply: "I'm back."

Back, Jordan was.

Jordan went on to play three-plus more seasons with the Bulls. Those seasons produced the second championship three-peat of Jordan's career and cemented his spot as the greatest basketball of player of all time and arguably the greatest athlete in U.S. history.

That's a high bar, even for a player of Donald's caliber. Nothing that Donald does this season or in any subsequent would place him alongside Jordan in the pantheon of sports.

But the message is clear. Donald is returning to to play alongside Myles Garrett for the Rams in pursuit of further greatness. His return, in fact, sets greatness as the only acceptable outcome in Los Angeles. A Rams team that was favored to win the Super Bowl without him is now about as big of a preseason favorite as a team can be.

It sets up an enormous amount of pressure in Los Angeles. For a player of Donald's caliber, facing that pressure head on is the only way.
