ESPN analyst says Bill Belichick is running out of time

Bill Belichick and the North Carolina Tar Heels kicked off their season in Dublin, Ireland against the TCU Horned Frogs in Week 1. Last season, in Belichick’s first game as head coach at North Carolina, TCU beat the Tar Heels, 48-14. North Carolina went on to have a 4-8 season and things aren’t much better off the field.

North Carolina football general manager Mike Lombardi was placed on administrative leave in July. Stephen Belichick, the team’s defensive coordinator, went on medical leave earlier this month and did not make the trip to Ireland.
On ESPN’s College Football Countdown, Booger McFarland made the case that Belichick is running out of time in Chapel Hill and doing a better job coaching may not be enough to save him.

“They may be better, but to your point, the name of the game is winning games,” said McFarland. “If they don’t win games, what you said earlier could come true which is he may not make it to the end of the season. It’s been a drastic shift in philosophy. Last year, 40 transfers. This year they signed 40 freshman. So you know what happens with young guys? You gotta teach them how to play. It takes time to develop a young guy. You know who doesn’t have time? Bill Belichick does not have time because they want to win now. It’s amazing. They go from up on TCU seven-nothing in the first game. Michael Jordan and Mia Hamm are going crazy in the stands. It’s gone downhill ever since.”

Remember that? The huge celebrity turnout for last year’s UNC season-opener? Michael Jordan hanging out with “Hair Jordon?” North Carolina scoring on the opening drive and people briefly thinking Belichick might have figured out college football in just one offseason?
My how times have changed. This season going .500 and hanging onto the job will probably be considered a success for Belichick. Right now there doesn’t seem to be much optimism that will happen.
