Flag football teams prepare for first sanctioned season

MAIZE, Kan. (KSNW) — We are just a week away from the first sanctioned girls flag football games in Kansas.

Eleven teams convened at Maize South High School on Wednesday night for a jamboree.
"I'm very grateful that I'm able to partake in this being a first year of a sanctioned sport because as a little girl, I always dreamed of playing football, but I wasn't able to because it was a 'boys' sport,'" Wichita North senior Hayden Pandey said. "I just feel grateful that I get to be out here and with all the other teams."
Wichita girls flag football duo builds fast bond, big dreamsThe teams participating in the exhibition included Maize South, Maize, Wichita North, Wichita Southeast, Wichita Northwest, Wichita East, Wichita Heights, Bishop Carroll, Kapaun Mt. Carmel, Derby and Campus high schools.
"I'm so excited because we're making history," Maize South senior Esther Cunningham said. "I think flag football is going to go really, really far, and I'm just so excited to be able to be a part of it."
The first day of the regular season kicks off next Wednesday with 29 games.
"I've never done something brand new before," Bishop Carroll senior Rhys Hauserman said. "To start a legend at Carroll is so exciting."
