Bailey leads Bulldogs to narrow win in Fulton

Christmas came early for Adeline Bailey – in a sense.

The junior battled a tough course and a tough opponent but led New Albany to victory in a nine-hole match at Fulton Country Club on Tuesday. Bailey shot a 3-under 32 to win medalist honors, as the Bulldogs edged Itawamba AHS by a stroke.
“Her scorecard looked like a Christmas tree,” New Albany coach Shane Sanderson said. “She had three bogeys, four birdies and an eagle – everything was red and green except for one hole.”
This was the fourth consecutive round under par for Bailey, who is a three-time individual state champion. After a sub-optimal showing – by her standards – in the team’s season opener on Aug. 10 at Tunica, Bailey has been pretty well locked in.
“Adeline is a special talent. When her head’s in the right place and she’s playing the course each hole, she’s fun to watch,” Sanderson said.
New Albany’s boys came up just short, falling by two strokes to Itawamba. Max Bullock was the Bulldogs’ top finisher with a 3-over. It was first match back for the team’s top two golfers, Landon Evans and Aden Owen, both of whom have been out with injuries.
Sanderson is hopeful those two can return to form so that New Albany can make it out of a stacked Region 1-4A. The top two teams from the region will advance to the state tournament.
“I wasn’t too disappointed in them,” Sanderson said. “Bottom line, we do have a lot of work to do.”
Moore sparking Braves
It’s no coincidence that Tishomingo County’s volleyball team got hot once Meg Moore returned to action.
An outside hitter, Moore missed the first several matches of the season for a very good reason – she was playing in the Nike Elite Youth Girls Basketball tournament. And while basketball is her main sport – the junior holds several Power Four offers – Moore is also a force on the volleyball court.
Her first game back, the Braves lost to Saltillo. They’ve won four in a row since and are 4-7 on the season.
“She’s brought a lot of leadership and energy to the team,” head coach Tannissa Jeffries said. “She’s just an all-around player. She makes my other players play harder. They have good communication on the court. I just feel like everything is coming together now.”
Over the last four games, Moore has recorded 58 kills. Jeffries also praised the play of outside hitter Sophie Northington – who recently notched her 1,000th career kill – libero Addy Barber, setter Addi Jo Tucker and defensive specialist Makinlee Yeager. Tucker and Yeager had a combined 29 assists in Tuesday’s 3-0 win over Ripley.
Tishomingo County is also benefitting from a brutal early schedule that included matches against East Union, Pontotoc and Tupelo.
“They have improved in our service attempts,” Jeffries said. “Our back row is communicating more. Now I have a libero – at the beginning of the season I didn’t have one. She’s put in a lot of time and effort.”
The Braves return to action Thursday night when they visit Kossuth.
