Twins starting pitcher Taj Bradley makes franchise history

Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Taj Bradley made MLB history Tuesday night, accomplishing something no pitcher in franchise history had ever done.

Bradley threw the first immaculate inning in Twins history, striking out three consecutive Athletics hitters on just nine pitches.

Bradley makes Twins history

The historic inning came in the bottom of the fifth against the Athletics. Bradley faced Carlos Cortes, Brian Serven and Henry Bolte and struck out all three hitters on nine pitches — every pitch a strike.

The final strike was particularly impressive. Bradley threw a 99.8 mph four-seam fastball at the bottom of the strike zone to strike out Bolte and complete the immaculate inning.

For a franchise with a long and impressive pitching history, the fact that nobody had previously accomplished the feat is remarkable. The Twins’ franchise history dates back to their move to Minnesota in 1961, and the organization had never recorded an immaculate inning until Bradley took the mound Tuesday.

Bradley continues impressive season

The immaculate inning was another highlight in what has been a strong season for the 25-year-old right-hander.

Bradley entered Tuesday with a 3.90 ERA and 158 strikeouts over 140⅔ innings, establishing himself as one of Minnesota’s most reliable starters. He also entered the night with a 3.1 WAR, leading the Twins’ starting rotation.

The performance against Oakland wasn’t perfect overall, as Bradley allowed four runs, but he still provided plenty of swing-and-miss stuff. The historic fifth inning gave Twins fans something they’ll remember for a long time.

An immaculate inning is rare enough on its own. Doing it for the first time in a franchise’s history makes the accomplishment even more significant.

Taj Bradley has now officially etched his name into Twins history, becoming the first pitcher in franchise history to throw an immaculate inning.
