Major water shutdown to hit parts of Durban overnight

Residents across parts of the Durban area have been warned of a 10-hour water shutdown this week as essential maintenance is carried out at a major water treatment works.
eThekwini Municipality said bulk water supplier uMngeni-uThukela Water will temporarily shut down the Midmar Water Treatment Works from 21:00 on Wednesday, 26 August, until 7:00 on Thursday, 27 August 2026.

The work involves replacing the chlorine carrier water piping system at the Midmar Water Works.
The shutdown may affect the water supply to areas served by the Western Aqueduct.

Residents urged to prepare
The shutdown is scheduled to last 10 hours, from Wednesday evening into Thursday morning.
Residents in affected areas may want to store enough water ahead of the shutdown, particularly households, businesses and other users that rely on a continuous supply overnight.
Although the shutdown is taking place overnight, residents are urged to be aware that water availability could be affected during and potentially after the maintenance period as the system returns to normal.
