Commanders sign former Pro Bowl offensive tackle

When the Washington Commanders released offensive tackle Foster Sarell on Tuesday afternoon, it meant they had a vacant roster spot ahead of Wednesday’s joint practice with the Baltimore Ravens in Owings Mills, Maryland. It didn’t take general manager Adam Peters long to fill that spot, as the Commanders signed veteran offensive tackle D.J. Humphries to a one-year deal.
Humphries, 32, was selected in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals. He was inactive for his entire rookie season, then started all 16 games in 2016. After beginning the year at right tackle, an injury to left tackle Jared Veldheer paved the way for Humphries to move to left tackle for the remainder of the season. In 2017, Humphries moved to left tackle full-time.

Over the next seven seasons, Humphries would be Arizona’s left tackle, earning a Pro Bowl berth in 2021. After his release in 2024, Humphries signed a one-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs. He appeared in two games for the Chiefs that season. Last year, Humphries signed a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Rams, appearing in eight games and making one start at left tackle.
After signing Humphries, Washington has Brandon Coleman and Josh Conerly Jr. as the projected starting tackles, with Trent Scott, Andrew Wylie, and Humphries as the reserves. That’s much better than it was, but questions still remain along the interior of Washington’s offensive line, specifically at left guard and center. We’ll soon see if Peters has any more moves up his sleeve, as all NFL teams must trim their roster to 53 players by next Sunday.
