Tourism Month puts this ONE South African province on the map

South Africa’s Tourism Month 2026 officially launched on 13 August, with a message aimed squarely at South Africans: tourism starts at home.

Speaking at the launch in Durban, Minister of Tourism Patricia de Lille said this year’s focus, “Growing South Africa’s Tourism Sector in the Digital Era,” reflects how travellers now discover and plan their trips.
Why this year’s campaign has a specific target
One province has been named the official focus for Tourism Month 2026: Limpopo.
South Africans are being encouraged to explore the province and share their experiences online throughout September, part of a broader push to get domestic travellers supporting local tourism businesses directly.
The numbers behind the push
The campaign comes off the back of genuinely strong domestic travel data.
In the first half of 2026, South Africans took 21.2 million overnight trips, up 4% from the same period last year.
Holiday trips specifically climbed 36% to 5.2 million.
De Lille also pointed to AI and digital tools playing a growing role in how South Africans research destinations, build itineraries, and even translate information while travelling.
What’s actually on offer for travellers
South Africans looking to take advantage can look out for Sho’t Left Travel Week in September.
It brings discounted travel packages designed to make exploring the country more affordable.
It directly incentivises the province-of-focus campaign. The goal is simple: get more people to actually book the trip rather than just talk about it.
Eish, hectic to think Limpopo is about to get its moment in the spotlight this September, hey. I might just have to plan a Sho’t Left of my own.
Have you ever explored Limpopo, or would the next trip be your first trip there?
