Bayern Munich repeated last year’s result with a 2-1 win on the road in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup. This year’s victim was Borussia Dortmund, who played a physical match, a typical style showcased by Niko Kovač teams. Bayern never trailed in the match by holding 61% possession, outshooting Dortmund 21-8 (10-3 with shots on target), and aggressively winning the ball back.

In the postgame interview, Bayern captain Manuel Neuer sent a strong message to Dortmund and the rest of the Bundesliga, reminding everyone that Bayern currently holds every trophy in Germany.

“It feels good,” said Neuer (via @iMiaSanMia). “We faced the second best team in Germany away from home, it’s always a fight and I think the better team won today. The Supercup is always a good season opener to see where we stand. The players came back at different times due to the World, we tried to make the most of the situation, and also integrate the new players. We worked hard, had a good preparation and are now ready for the new season.”

Bayern has participated in 14 of the last 15 German Supercups, bringing home some silverware in nine of those matches. Dortmund has now lost the Supercup more times than they have won the game.
