Has Percy Tau silently retired from football

· The South African

Percy Tau has not kicked a ball in more than three months, and the former Bafana Bafana star now finds himself without a club after returning to South Africa.

The 32-year-old forward recently returned home following a short stint with Vietnamese club Thep Xanh Nam Dinh FC. His time in Vietnam lasted just five months, but it failed to provide the revival he was hoping for, with Tau scoring only one goal.

Before his move to Vietnam, Tau enjoyed a successful four-year spell with Egyptian giants Al Ahly. However, changes in coaching staff saw his role gradually diminish, with the Lion of Judah increasingly used as a substitute.

His move to Vietnam was supposed to offer a fresh start, but it ultimately failed to reignite his career. Tau’s struggles also saw him lose his place in the Bafana Bafana setup, eventually missing out on the squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Percy Tau nowhere to be seen

Now, with the new Betway Premiership season already underway, Tau remains a free agent. The former Mamelodi Sundowns star has indicated that he is open to joining a club in the PSL as he looks for the next chapter of his career.

At 32, Tau should still have a few years left at the highest level if he can rediscover his form and fitness. However, his next move is far from certain.

A return to one of the PSL’s biggest clubs appears unlikely. Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns already have plenty of attacking quality, and Tau could struggle to secure a regular place in their starting line-ups.

That leaves Tau facing an important decision. He could look for an opportunity at another Premiership club where he can play regularly and rebuild his confidence, or he could consider stepping away from football altogether.

For a player who once represented one of South Africa’s brightest attacking talents, the coming months could determine whether Percy Tau gets one more opportunity to revive his career or quietly brings his playing days to an end.
