Jackson Merrill quietly did something that will cost the Padres millions

Jackson Merrill has turned it around in the second half of the 2026 season. Across his last 28 games, the 23-year-old has elevated San Diego’s offense to another level, posting a .324 batting average, .348 on-base percentage and .987 OPS.

He has also smashed nine home runs, already just one short of his first-half total in 65 fewer games. The Padres’ chances of making the postseason have increased significantly through Merrill’s hot stretch, and it is reassuring to see him perform at this level.

Ever since his breakout rookie season, in which he earned an All-Star selection and a runner-up finish in NL Rookie of the Year voting, his numbers had regressed.

The Padres signed Merrill to a nine-year, $135 million contract back in April of 2025 during his sophomore season. The deal keeps him in San Diego through at least the 2034 season and was widely viewed as team-friendly considering how high his ceiling is as a player.

However, there are certain contract clauses that allow Merrill to earn himself more money simply by being on the field. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, one of those clauses was tied to total plate appearances.

With Merrill reaching his 500th plate appearance this past Friday, he officially activated a clause in his contract that adds an extra $5 million to his deal, meaning the Padres are now on the hook for $140 million rather than $135 million.

The Padres are certainly happy to pay that price given Merrill’s value and how young he is. Even when the bat has been inconsistent, he still thrives in every other aspect of the game as an elite defensive center fielder whose speed also helps him on the bases, where he has collected 24 stolen bases this year.

With the Padres looking to secure a wild card spot, Merrill is stepping up at exactly the right time, and his availability has earned him a well-deserved raise.
