How former LSU football QB Garrett Nussmeier played in NFL debut

Former LSU football quarterback Garrett Nussmeier made his NFL preseason debut on Saturday. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback went 13/19 for 98 yards. He was sacked twice, and the Chiefs lost 20-12. Nussmeier didn't throw a touchdown, but he didn't turn the ball over either.

Nussmeier was picked No. 249 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft. Entering the draft, Nussmeier was projected to go much higher, but he slipped to the seventh round. The draft slide cost Nussmeier some cash, though he's in a stable situation with the Chiefs and a proven offensive coaching staff.

Nussmeier spent five years at LSU and became QB1 in 2024. Nussmeier threw for 7,699 yards in his collegiate career, along with 52 touchdowns. Nussmeier completed 64% of his passes and threw 24 interceptions.

Nussmeier's final year in Baton Rouge was inconsistent as the quarterback dealt with a lingering injury for much of the year. LSU's season was a letdown, and Nussmeier took the last snaps of his LSU career vs. Alabama in early November, and Michael Van Buren finished the season at QB.

In a highlight from the preseason game, Nussmeier can be seen escaping the pocket to his right and delivering an accurate throw on the run.

In another clip, Nussmeier rolls right and completes a pass on the run, giving the WR enough space to get his feet down and secure the catch.
