Just days after ESPN agreed to air the Patriot Games, an initiative of the Trump administration and the Freedom 250 project, one of its biggest stars joined the president for a photo op ahead of the competition’s final round.

On Tuesday evening, a White House account on X posted a video of Pat McAfee welcoming President Donald Trump on the tarmac in Cleveland as Trump arrived for the high school sports competition. McAfee then smiled for photos with Trump before walking to Marine One, the president’s helicopter.
Presumably, the two flew together to Spire Academy, the sports boarding school outside Cleveland where the inaugural Patriot Games were held this week.

Two high school-aged athletes from each state were selected to compete for a scholarship fund, which will be awarded to one young man and one young woman. According to the competition’s website, “the event will feature a series of athletic challenges designed to test strength, endurance, agility, teamwork, and perseverance, including a Presidential Fitness Test, a military-inspired boot camp circuit, an obstacle course, and team competitions such as Kickball, Dodgeball, Tug of War, and Victory Hoops.”
ESPN aired the Patriot Games on its app this week, and will broadcast a one-hour primetime special on its cable network Thursday night.
McAfee discussed the Patriot Games on his show Tuesday, noting the festivities in the intro each hour. In the final moments of the televised version of his show, McAfee provided further details about the competition. The host later elaborated on its benefits, praising the competition for helping to inspire physical activity and keep kids engaged in sports.
“We have no idea what’s going on over there, certainly something we would be interested in though,” McAfee said. “Would certainly like to help this continue.”
McAfee’s relationship with the Trump administration traces back to last year, when he interviewed the president live on ESPN for a Veterans Day broadcast. McAfee also later recalled an in-person visit with Trump at the College Football Playoff national championship game, where the president approved McAfee to broadcast live from the White House for UFC Freedom 250. Those plans did not come to fruition.
When McAfee received pushback for the Trump appearance last November, the host said the conversation was all about honoring U.S. military members.
“So if you’re against what happened yesterday, I would like to say, you hate the troops,” he said. “And you should go ahead and swallow that, and you can take that to where you want to go.”
As Trump has inserted himself into the sports world more than perhaps any other U.S. president in his second term, the connections to McAfee have become more regular. However, McAfee’s attendance at the Patriot Games after claiming he had little to no knowledge of the competition paints an even more bizarre picture than the previous run-ins.
Particularly at a time when ESPN has tried hard to distance itself from political headlines and embrace “authentic” passion for sports, McAfee isn’t making that any easier by publicly appearing with this president — even if it is for an event that the Worldwide Leader is airing.
