Twitter Gold: ESPN On Duke’s 2010 National Championship Over Butler
· Yahoo Sports
We don’t have any way to know, of course, but if you asked Mike Krzyzewski which of his championship teams was his favorite, he might choose the 2010 team.

There are a couple of reasons why that might be the case. First, the core of that team really grew. In 2008, they lost to West Virginia when the Mountaineers just beat Duke up one side and down the other, and that had to get under Krzyzewski’s skin, since softness in his players really annoyed the heck out of him. Secondly, while that team featured seven players who went on to the NBA, it’s not like there were future All-Stars up and down the roster.
Duke started Kyle Singler, Brian Zoubek, Lance Thomas, Nolan Smith, and Jon Scheyer, and it was not soft.
The greatest indication of this prior to the championship game was a rematch with West Virginia, which Duke won easily, beating the Mountaineers, 78-57. More to the point, the Blue Devils were physically dominant, which must have pleased Coach K after the 2008 game.
And then the win over an extraordinary Butler team, which came down to the very last second, and which required immense mental toughness.
Butler was really a special team, and it took an incredible effort to win that game.
This video from ESPN recaps the game, and salutes Duke’s team, and what it accomplished. As noted above, we can’t possibly know which championship team is Coach K’s favorite, and we’re pretty sure he’d insist he doesn’t have one.
But the 2010 team?
That one was pretty special.
