St Stithians honours Cameron Waldeck-Cooks in Women’s Day message

St Stithians College has paid tribute to late Grade 11 learner Cameron Waldeck-Cooks on Women’s Day, saying its community remains in “profound mourning” following her death.
In a message marking Women’s Day on Sunday, the school said its thoughts were particularly with Cameron’s family as South Africa honoured the women and young women who contribute to their communities.

“Our College remains in profound mourning following the tragic loss of Cameron Waldeck-Cooks, a deeply loved young woman in our Saints family,” the school said.
Honour the courage of women
The tribute comes as South Africa marks 70 years since the historic Women’s March of 1956, when more than 20 000 women marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against the extension of pass laws to women.
St Stithians said the anniversary provided an opportunity to honour the courage of those women and recognise the progress made through their actions and the work of subsequent generations.
The school also acknowledged that significant challenges remain in the pursuit of equality, dignity and justice.
“As a St Stithians community, we reaffirm our commitment to continuing that work,” the college said.
Murder investigation
Cameron, 17, was found dead at a lodge in Sabie, Mpumalanga, earlier this month alongside St Stithians alumnus Ethan Coetzee, 19.
Police have since opened a murder investigation following post-mortem findings which suggested Cameron may have been strangled.
Police believe Coetzee died by suicide.

Cameron’s parents, Derrick Cooks and Claire Waldeck-Cooks, have urged the public not to speculate about the circumstances surrounding their daughter’s death while the investigation and forensic processes continue.
The family has also asked for privacy as they mourn her loss.
A memorial service is expected to be held later in August.
