Star pitcher Zack Wheeler had some drama go down between him and the Toronto Blue Jays during the Philadelphia Phillies’ contest on Friday night.

Wheeler is going through the 13th year of his career in the majors, his seventh with the Phillies. He shines as one of the top pitchers in the league, being a three-time All-Star while winning the Golden Glove in 2023.

Wheeler was up and down throughout his start on the mound in Philadelphia’s series opener against Toronto. In 5.1 innings of action, he struck out five batters but conceded seven hits and four runs.

That wasn’t why he garnered attention during the game. The Toronto dugout accused him of taking his foot off the rubber while throwing pitches, resulting in the referees making some ejections. Wheeler responded with an expletive following the officiating decision.

The star pitcher reflected on the moments after the game. He decided to take shots at how they complain about issues following past defeats.

“They’ve lost a lot of games over there, so they’re probably trying to pick some things up to complain about,” Wheeler said.

How Zack Wheeler, Phillies played against Blue Jays

Zack Wheeler and the Phillies ended up falling short to the Blue Jays. They lost by a 5-4 score despite attempting a late rally in the final innings.

Toronto took control with a 3-2 lead after four innings, adding two more runs in the sixth and eighth frames. Philadelphia was silent for five consecutive innings before finally scoring twice in the ninth frame, being unsuccessful in their rally attempt.

Philadelphia fell to a 62-55 record on the season, sitting at second place in the NL East Division standings. They are above the Miami Marlins and the Washington Nationals while trailing the Atlanta Braves.

The Phillies will look to bounce back in Game 2 of their series against the Blue Jays. That contest will commence on Aug. 8 at 6:05 p.m. ET.
