JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — The East Tennessee State University Buccaneers football team continued to push through the heat of fall camp, focusing all their energy on the upcoming Saturday scrimmage at William B. Greene Jr. Stadium.
Wednesday had marked a major milestone as the players strapped on the pads for the first time, but Head Coach Will Healy came away from the session looking for more. While the physical contact was a welcome change, the coaching staff felt the overall urgency and intensity fell short of the standard needed to win games in the Southern Conference.

Despite those early frustrations, bright spots have emerged across several key position groups. The offensive and defensive lines have set a physical tone, while the wide receivers and tight ends have shown strong chemistry and execution throughout the opening week of practice. However, two critical areas remain completely up for grabs: quarterback and defensive back. The coaching staff views both as open competitions, with Saturday’s scrimmage serving as the first major evaluation tool to start separating the contenders from the pretenders.
Coach Healy expressed confidence in the talent competing under center, noting that the depth at quarterback gives the staff plenty of strong options to evaluate. The plan moving forward is to gradually narrow down the rotation after this weekend’s action, with another cut in reps following the second scrimmage. The situation in the secondary has proven a bit more complicated, largely because nagging injuries have kept several defensive backs on the sideline. While the coaching staff likes the overall potential of the unit, the lack of full health has slowed down the battle for starting spots.
