Commanders to sign veteran offensive lineman

Friday was a busy day for the Washington Commanders. First, Washington announced the signing of four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Stefon Diggs, followed by the news that Dorance Armstrong, Trey Amos and Tress Way were activated from the physically unable to perform/non-football injury lists.

Then, Washington practiced, as Diggs took the field for the first time as a Commander.

Now, the Commanders have made another move. According to Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports, Washington is expected to sign veteran offensive lineman Max Scharping. Scharping, 29, is a former second-round pick of the Houston Texans back in the 2019 NFL Draft.

After three years in Houston, Scharping was waived and then spent the next two seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals. He signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2024, but was released during final cuts. The Commanders then immediately signed Scharping to their practice squad, where he remained for over a month until the Pittsburgh Steelers signed him to their 53-man roster.

Scharping has appeared in 81 career games, making 33 starts. He has played both guard spots and center. The Commanders prefer backup offensive linemen who can play multiple positions, and Scharping could get a serious look as a potential backup center to Nick Allegretti. Allegretti remains out with a calf injury, but should return soon. In his absence, Julian Good-Jones has been the No. 1 center, with rookie Matt Gulbin as the backup.
