Eagles get Lane Johnson back after excused camp absence

Lane Johnson is back with the Philadelphia Eagles.

The All-Pro right tackle returned to the team and is expected to practice Friday, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. Johnson had been away for the better part of the past week with an excused, non-injury designation.

Johnson’s absence began as a personal matter and was never connected to a physical setback. Still, any extended absence involving the 35-year-old was going to receive attention after the way his 2025 season ended. Johnson missed the final seven games of the regular season and Philadelphia’s wild-card loss to the San Francisco 49ers because of a Lisfranc injury. He announced in February that he would return for his 14th NFL season, ending any questions about retirement.

Friday’s expected return to practice is another positive step.

The Eagles have used Johnson’s absence to evaluate their reserve tackles and give younger offensive linemen additional work. Those reps could become important during the regular season, but Philadelphia’s offensive line operates differently when Johnson is available.

Johnson remains one of the NFL’s best right tackles and one of the most important players on the Eagles’ roster. His experience is also valuable as Philadelphia installs Sean Mannion’s offense and continues adjusting to changes on the coaching staff. The Eagles can still manage Johnson’s workload throughout training camp. He doesn’t need every practice rep to prepare for the regular season, and keeping him healthy will matter more than maximizing his August workload.

The important news is that Johnson’s absence wasn’t injury-related and has come to an end. With the regular season approaching, the Eagles have their starting right tackle back in the building and ready to resume work.
