The Arizona Diamondbacks are in the middle of a crucial series against the San Diego Padres, a division rival and their closest competitor for the third and final NL Wild Card spot. And they entrusted Wednesday night’s contest against the Padres to rookie left-handed pitcher Mitch Bratt, who was making just the sixth start of his MLB career.

Bratt entered the night with an ERA of 5.23 in 20.2 innings of work, so it’s not like he’s set the world on fire to start things off in the big leagues. But the 23-year-old southpaw somehow turned in the best start of his young career, twirling a nine-strikeout, one-hit gem across seven shutout innings in a 10-4 win for the Diamondbacks over the Padres.

In so doing, Bratt became just the second rookie pitcher in Diamondbacks franchise history to pitch at least seven shutout innings, allow one or fewer hit, and strike out at least eight. He joined Zac Gallen in that exclusive company, as per Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

Bratt’s stellar night made even more history when he became the only rookie southpaw in big-league history to pitch at least seven innings, allow one hit or fewer, strike out at least nine batters, throw fewer than 100 pitches, and get the win, according to OptaSTATS.

The Diamondbacks rookie, by striking out nine, now has the second-most strikeouts in a single MLB game for a Canadian born rookie aged 23 or younger, as per StatsCentre.

Suffice to say, Bratt announced his arrival in a big way for the Diamondbacks, and he’s expected to play a huge part in getting Arizona back to the postseason after they missed the proceedings in 2025.

The Diamondbacks acquired Bratt from the Texas Rangers in the trade that sent Merrill Kelly to the Lone Star State last year. Bratt was drafted in the fifth round by the Rangers in 2021.
