The Cleveland Cavaliers are still trying to solidify their starting wing position with training camp approaching at the end of the month. Cleveland has been pursuing Jonathan Kuminga for quite some time, but a deal has yet to come together.

Kuminga and his camp have proven difficult to negotiate with, especially as they continue searching for a long-term contract that meets their expectations. Just last week, the Cavaliers reportedly met with Kuminga in an effort to move closer toward an agreement.
“The Cavaliers will meet with Jonathan Kuminga about working towards finalizing a potential sign-and-trade agreement soon, per Chris Fedor. Cleveland is a main finalist for Kuminga’s services alongside the Lakers. Kuminga continues to seek a deal exceeding $20 million annually,” NBA reporter Evan Sidery wrote.
While the Kuminga process has been anything but smooth, Cleveland appears to be exploring other options. The Cavaliers are reportedly shifting their attention toward NBA champion Peyton Watson, who is also searching for a potential sign-and-trade opportunity.
“The Cavaliers appear to be prioritizing Peyton Watson now over Jonathan Kuminga as their Plan B wing option after missing out on LeBron James. Cleveland would offer Max Strus or Dennis Schröder alongside a future swap. The Nuggets remain in a serious bind due to apron issues,” Sidery wrote.
Watson has become an intriguing alternative because of his upside and the possibility that he could be easier to acquire. The only issue is that Cleveland is not the only team interested, with both the Los Angeles Clippers and Milwaukee Bucks also pursuing the young forward.
“The Nuggets are in active sign-and-trade discussions with the Bucks, Cavaliers and Clippers on Peyton Watson, per Shams Charania. If Denver doesn’t deal Watson, taking the qualifying offer to become an unrestricted free agent in 2027 appears likely due to failed negotiations,” Sidery posted.
Landing Watson would be a major addition for the Cavaliers, although Cleveland may not have as many assets available as some of the other teams involved. Denver also faces a difficult decision, as Watson could choose to accept the qualifying offer and enter unrestricted free agency in 2027 if a deal cannot be reached.
Watson has earned $11 million throughout his young career. If Cleveland is looking for a player who can develop into a long-term difference-maker, Watson could be the type of high-upside addition the team needs. His elite athleticism and defensive potential would give the Cavaliers another dynamic piece on the wing.
