Bringing back Notre Dame vs USC is a win for college football

SOUTH BEND — They finally got it right. They finally made it right.
Whether it has been conference realignment, playoff expansion or general stupidity in the sport, college football has rarely been associated with two words for too long.

Common sense.
Who had it? More like who didn’t.
Until the early afternoon of Monday, August 3. Days before Notre Dame football embarks on a journey that many believe will take head coach Marcus Freeman and the Irish to the doorstep of the school’s first national championship in 38 seasons, common sense prevailed.
Notre Dame and USC, its main rival — its only rival — agreed to do something it should always do. Every. Single. Fall. Here, in the Midwest. There, on the West Coast with the Pacific Ocean in the distance. Beginning again in 2030, Notre Dame and USC will play college football for four straight seasons. Two seasons here. Two seasons there.
After that, who knows, but 2030 is a start. Make that a re-start.
Common sense.
Notre Dame announced on August 3 an agreement to reignite a series that never should have been extinguished. USC said this and did that, and Notre Dame said this and did that, and before anyone could calm down, last October’s game in the rain and wind of Notre Dame Stadium marked the unofficial end for two teams that had met nearly every season since they first met in 1926.
That’s a lot of games (96). A lot of history. A lot of moments. A lot of college football shoved aside because Notre Dame and its pride couldn’t agree with USC and its pride. Who was responsible? Who cares. College football lost.
That still lingers over this 2026 season. Barely 24 hours after the announcement, Freeman was scheduled to meet with the media to mark the unofficial start of another season of college football at a place where college football is king.
Anticipation about this Irish season is as high as a clear summer’s sky (like the one Aug. 3). Is this the team? Is this the year? Despite all of that, something about this 2026 season doesn’t seem right. It seems like something is missing.
Make that, someone.
