Eskom announces a 14-hour power outage in Gauteng on Monday
· The South African

Eskom has announced a 14-hour electricity supply interruption in Gauteng, set to affect customers in the Cullinan area on Monday, 3 August. The outage forms part of essential maintenance being conducted on the region’s distribution network, according to a notice issued by Eskom’s Gauteng Cluster.
The interruption will begin at 7:00 and continue until 21:00, spanning most of the day. Eskom says the extended timeframe is necessary to complete the required maintenance work on distribution power lines serving the area.

Why the power outage is happening
According to Eskom, the planned interruption is intended to perform essential maintenance on ageing infrastructure that keeps electricity flowing reliably to homes and businesses. Maintenance of this kind, while disruptive in the short term, is intended to prevent more serious and less predictable outages down the line.
Eskom has urged affected customers to treat all electrical appliances as live throughout the outage period, warning that power could be restored without notice before the scheduled end time. The utility apologised for the inconvenience the extended outage may cause and thanked customers for their patience.
Eskom included a disclaimer in its notice, cautioning that the maintenance schedule could still change.
“Please note that, should circumstances beyond the control of Eskom arise, the planned electricity maintenance may not proceed as communicated,” the notice read.
How to stay updated and get help
Eskom has provided several channels for customers who want more information or need to report supply issues during the outage. These include the “MyEskom Customer” self-help app and a WhatsApp line at 0860 037 566.
Customers can also access Eskom’s Alfred chatbot online, while billing enquiries can be checked through the utility’s online portal on weekdays between 8:00 and 16:00. For supply-related queries, Eskom’s contact centre remains available 24 hours a day on 0860 037 566.
The notice was developed by Eskom’s Gauteng Communication and Stakeholder Management division as part of its ongoing efforts to keep customers informed ahead of planned maintenance work across the province.
