Matt Campbell provides positive injury update on top backup QB
· Yahoo Sports
During Big Ten media day, Matt Campbell had many things to discuss. Of course, some of the big ones turned out to be the culture he is trying to set and which positions could be key to Penn State's success. One important one came about the condition of redshirt freshman transfer QB Alex Manske. Manske had to miss all of spring practices with an undisclosed injury, but all signs point to a return for fall camp.
"I think where we won tremendously was that Alex really got cleared [to participate in offseason drills] right around the first of June,” Campbell told reporters. “There was a process back, and by July 1, he was actually fully cleared for football. He's been throwing. He's had the opportunity to go through the majority of our summer program, and he will be ready to go and fully cleared as we start fall camp".

This comes as fantastic news for the depth of Penn State's QB room. Manske's health could be paramount to how the long-term future of the QB room shakes out. Fellow quarterback Rocco Becht has also had his fair share of injury concerns, especially this offseason as he was recovering from a shoulder injury. Therefore, should anything happen to Becht, Manske could have to be ready for anything.
It's not as if the rest of the QBs on the roster can't play. It's just that they are either too young or don't have the requisite experience at the D-I level. Connor Barry is a senior, but came from the D-III ranks. Both Kase Evans, another transfer from Iowa State and Peyton Falzone are freshmen. While Manske is in a similar spot, he still has the trust of coach Campbell and also has taken some snaps at the collegiate level.
That's why the importance of his return could prove to be so pivotal. No one knows who the QB will be in 2027, so Matt Campbell may as well start preparing for life after Rocco Becht. Of course, it will only play off if Manske stays healthy. For now, the Nittany Lions are glad to have him back and ready for the start of the season.
