‘I didn’t want you to be with another person’: Pretoria man faces charges over alleged intentional HIV infection

A 47-year-old man appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court earlier this week for a bail hearing in his attempted murder case after he was accused of intentionally infecting his girlfriend of eight months with HIV.
The National Prosecuting Authority said relationship started in October 2025, lasting until June 2026, when the man’s girlfriend (38) found antiretroviral (ARV) medication in his belongings.

Upon confrontation, the man, who hails from Boschkop in Pretoria, admitted ownership of the ARV medication, and that he was, indeed, HIV-positive, despite previously saying he was HIV-negative, according to eNCA.

“The accused allegedly informed her that he had intentionally infected her because he did not want her to be with another person. The complainant underwent an HIV test at a medical facility and was informed that she had tested positive for HIV,” said NPA, as reported by joburgect.com.
“The following day, she reported the matter to the police. The accused was subsequently arrested on the same day at their place of residence,” NPA Regional Spokesperson for the Gauteng Division in Pretoria, Lumka Mahanjana stated.
The court hearing has been postponed until 3 August for the collection of bail information, reports SmileFM.
He is remanded in custody until his next court appearance.
