Panthers HC Dave Canales is asked about NFLPA's investigation into Nic Scourton's injury

Carolina Panthers outside linebacker Nic Scourton saw his 2026 season come to an end on Friday, when he was placed on injured reserve after tearing his ACL in the opening session of training camp. But the story behind the devastating setback may not be wrapped up just yet.

As first reported by Pro Football Talk, the NFL Players Association is investigating the circumstances of Scourton's injury. Per PFT's Mike Florio, the NFLPA will review video of the incident, and determine whether or not the Panthers violated the collective bargaining agreement's guidelines regarding summer workouts.

The CBA prohibits teams from promoting high-intensity activity during the early days of training camp. Scourton's tear occurred on the first day of the agreement's mandatory, five-day acclimation period.

Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer also reported on Saturday, via a team spokesperson, that the Panthers are cooperating with the investigation.

Head coach Dave Canales was asked about the situation following Sunday's practice.

"We're aware that they're looking into," Canales told reporters. "We have the rules, we have the standards, we let them know. All we can really do is lay the groundwork out, show the guys good examples of what it looks like and go from there."

Per Joe Person of The Athletic, the Seattle Seahawks were penalized at least three times for practice intensity from 2012 to 2016—when Canales was a member of their coaching staff. Canales briefly touched on that history as well.

"Yeah, we had a couple, just in Seattle," he stated. "We had a couple situations where they were pretty critical of what we were doing in our practices. We had to adjust, and there might have bene some fines thrown out there."

On the third instance, Seahawks and then-head coach Pete Carroll were both fined. Seattle was also docked a fifth-round pick and a week of organized team activities.
