The Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers have a fierce rivalry, which 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan reignited after some very down seasons post-Jim Harbaugh. Shanahan broke his nose, three ribs and his hand, needed more than 40 stitches in his face, and suffered a severe concussion during a July 14 car crash when he collided with an SUV near his northern California home, according to sources familiar with the situation.
He was taken by paramedics to a local hospital, where he spent much of that day before being released. The other driver was not injured, according to Palo Alto Lt. Nicholas Martinez.
While Shanahan will be at camp in a limited capacity, assistant head coach Chris Foerster and team coordinators will effectively fill the head coach responsibilities for the foreseeable future. A news conference will be held by 49ers general manager John Lynch later today (Saturday, Jul. 25).
According to the police report, no one was cited, both Shanahan and the other driver were cooperative with authorities, and drugs and alcohol were not involved in the accident.
Rivalries aside, it’s good to know that his injuries are non-life threatening. It’s still nevertheless a scary and unfortunate ordeal to go through, and hopefully Coach Shanahan makes a full recovery. Given the Seahawks have ties to Shanahan through offensive line coach John Benton, new offensive coordinator Brian Fleury, run game coordinator Justin Outten, and quarterback Sam Darnold, I’m sure they’ll be sending their well wishes to him if they haven’t already.
