At the same time, I also recognize that teams have to improve on both sides of the basketball year in and year out if they want to stay contenders.
Just because the Spurs have one of the brightest futures in the NBA doesn't mean that everything is going to go according to plan.
In fact, we've seen countless times now when these young star teams don't win anything and get split up after a few years. Fortunately for San Antonio, it doesn't look like it will go down that path, but it can never be ruled out.
Among the players I'd love the Spurs to go after, a guy like Cam Johnson from the Denver Nuggets is at the top of the list. Trey Murphy would be another guy, but it's unclear whether he's available. While there were reports indicating that Johnson is available, the latest one suggests that the Nuggets have received calls about him but have told teams they aren't looking to move on.
“Numerous teams have called the Denver Nuggets hoping they’d be willing to dump forward Cam Johnson, who’s owed $23.06 million in the final year of his contract, but those inquiries have been rebuffed, league sources told HoopsHype,” Michael Scotto wrote.
If there's one team that could entice many with a potential trade for an impact-caliber player like Johnson, it would be San Antonio. The Spurs have a slew of assets in the short and long term, making them a viable option for any above-average player who becomes available.
That's also part of the reason why San Antonio might not want to go in this direction right now, as it could be waiting to make other moves in the future.
