The St. Louis Cardinals are doing their best to stay in the thick of things. Going into Wednesday's matchups, they hold a 51-49 record.

While it's a positive record, they are 11.5 games behind the National League Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers. However, they are a half-game back of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Arizona Diamondbacks, who are tied for the NL's final wild card spot.
They are still well within the playoff picture and could be a little aggressive ahead of the trade deadline. They need some more frontline starting pitching and could use another arm in the bullpen as well.

With a need for pitching, it may not hurt the Cardinals to phone up a familiar friend. Former general manager John Mozeliak is the current interim general manager for the Los Angeles Angels. That familiar connection could help them land LHP Reid Detmers, per Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller.
"Most likely, their first call if they're buying is going to be to the Angels. Their current interim general manager, John Mozeliak, had been with the Cardinals for three decades, spending 2007-2025 as their general manager before he passed the torch to Chaim Bloom... And if the Cardinals are looking to make a pretty big move for two-plus years of Reid Detmers, that connection could pay major dividends."
Detmers is a great option for the Cardinals, given he is under team control through 2028. That alone fits the team's plans while helping their rotation now.
There's also a good bounce-back opportunity for the lefty. He has good strikeout numbers and a low walk rate, while scouts were extremely high on him coming out of college.
Detmers may not be the biggest name on the trade block, but with the Mozeliak connection, his team control, and raw stuff, he makes a ton of sense for St. Louis.
