Gonzalez has been angling for a new contract throughout the offseason. He skipped organized team activities during the spring, and although he returned for mandatory minicamp, he was not a full participant.
There was hope that the Patriots and Gonzalez would agree on an extension before training camp, but a resolution might ultimately come after the Seattle Seahawks and All-Pro cornerback Devon Witherspoon complete their contract negotiations.
“The Seahawks have, to my understanding, they have an offer of upwards of $30 million, one that would make Witherspoon among the, if not the highest-paid corner in the NFL," said Rapoport. "No resolution yet on that deal, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if Witherspoon gets done first, and then Gonzalez gets done at some point shortly after with the market set.”

It's important to note that both Witherspoon and Gonzalez have the same agent at Wind Sports.
So it might only be a matter of one deal getting done, setting the market and paving the way for the other to follow. Gonzalez is one of the best corners in the NFL, and the Patriots are looking to keep and reward the player they drafted.
