The 6'9, 23-year-old big man averaged 8.9 points and 5.7 rebounds in 24 minutes across the EuroCup and PLK, and brings senior national team experience with Poland at the FIBA level. pic.twitter.com/KQtrGd8jTQ
Urbaniak played this past season for WKS Slask Wroclaw, part of the highest-tier level in Polish Men’s basketball. In 55 games across various levels and tournaments, Urbaniak averaged 8.9 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 0.8 blocks on 53% shooting from the floor and 29% shooting from three.
Urabaniak is athletic frontcourt player who can finish around the rim and is an active rebounder on both ends of the floor. He has the ability to hit outside shots, shooting 25-74 (34%) in 35 games in Polish pro league this season. BYU will use his skill in the pick-and-roll, put him in situations where he can hit open outside shots, and rely on his athletic ability to create second chance points and protect the rim. Urbaniak is listed at 6-foot-9, so there will be some Big 12 matchups where he could be overwhelmed by bigger and bulkier big men.
Urbaniak’s motor is one of his best skills. One European scout’s quick scouting report to me: “Very high motor and athletic. Just a tad bit small at the 5 spot. One more big (for BYU) and it’s great.”
With Urbaniak’s signing, BYU has two more roster spots to fill. I expect at least one of those spots to be another big man. Urbaniak will compete to be BYU’s starting big man and join a starting five that likely includes Rob Wright, Collin Chandler, Bruce Brance, and Jake Wahlin/Tyler Betsey.
Jakub turns 24 in January and will likely have one year of eligibility remaining.
