Cameras Catch Valkyries Star Tiffany Hayes' Disrespectful Gesture as Mystics Celebrate Win With Sonia Citron Emote

The Washington Mystics came up with a clutch performance as they beat the pre-match favorites, the Golden State Valkyries, on Monday. In a tough road game at the Chase Center in San Francisco, the Mystics overcame the Valkyries’ top-rated defense with a massive 4th-quarter comeback. So, the Mystics players celebrated their big win with a dance where everyone, including Sonia Citron, hit Citron’s signature three-finger emote.
However, Tiffany Hayes didn’t vibe with her opponents beating them and then dancing on their home court. The camera panned to capture Valkyries guard making a disrespectful ‘L’ gesture towards the dancing Mystics players as she made her way back to the locker room.

The Mystics were actually trailing the game with around three minutes left on the clock before they went on a scintillating 17-2 run to close the game in their favor. Kiki Iriafen finished as the Mystics’ top scorer for the night, notching 23 points and 12 rebounds. Shakira Austin finished with 15 points and 15 rebounds, and Sonia Citron added 17 points and 6 assists.
Kaitlyn Chen had 20 points and six assists for the Valkyries, who squandered many opportunities down the stretch.
The gesture from Hayes came after what was a very physical game. Washington rookie Cotie McMahon committed a hard foul against Janelle Salaun with 1:16 to go in the third quarter. The play was later reviewed, and the Mystics guard received a technical for landing on Salaun’s hair with her foot.
Despite all this, the Mystics have pleasantly surprised everyone with their performances this season. Sonia Citron in particular has been quite impressive, averaging 17 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.3 steals per game this season. She leads the Mystics team in points and steals. Both Citron and Iriafen will feature in the coming All-Star game for the second consecutive year.
The Mystics rank number 1 in the WNBA in total rebounds per game at 37.2, according to ESPN, overwhelmingly controlling the glass behind Iriafen and center Shakira Austin’s dominant display.
With a 13-12 record, the Mystics are 4th in the Eastern Conference and are not out of the playoff picture yet if they can string together more of these wins, a prediction very few would have made before the start of this season.
Following the All-Star break, the Mystics return to action on July 28, 2026, kicking off a crucial stretch that will heavily dictate their postseason. However, before that, they’ll have to face defending champions, the Las Vegas Aces.
