Donald Trump signs executive order authorizing new 50% tariff on Canada

The United States said that it will impose a new 50% tariff on goods from Canada, including many that comply with the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement, after President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday.
The tariffs will begin being levied in 30 days and the announcement came mere days after Trump had threatened to hit the nation with tariffs over wildfire smoke from Canada blanketing some parts of the U.S.
That was not included among the reasons for imposing the new tariffs, however, with the White House instead blaming Canada’s retaliation against previous U.S. tariffs, provincial bans on American alcohol and what they said was discrimination against U.S. motor vehicles and dairy products.
Trump used Section 338 of the U.S. Tariff Act of 1930 to justify the decision, which the Financial Times reported had never been used before to impose duties on trading partners .

Energy, potash, critical mineral, fish imports excluded
“This is not a trade war with Canada, these are defensive measures,” a senior White House administration official said during an afternoon conference call with reporters.
While the new tariff will not be levied on energy, potash, critical mineral and fish imports, they will target many CUSMA-compliant goods that had been exempt from previous levies imposed by Trump.
Some of the goods that will be affected, the White House said in a statement, include everything from “wine to hockey sticks to cement.
“President Trump is taking action to hold Canada accountable for its continued discrimination against and unreasonable and unequal treatment of U.S. commerce that has burdened and disadvantaged hardworking Americans,” the White House statement said.
