‘Didn’t See This Coming,’ ‘Long Overdue Decision’ — NFL World Has Mixed Reactions to ESPN Firing Ryan Clark
· Yahoo Sports
NFL fans got to know Ryan Clark as a hard-hitting safety who earned a Pro Bowl nod and won Super Bowl XLIII while playing 13 seasons that spanned three different teams. Once his playing career wrapped up after the 2014 season, Clark quickly found his next path in 2015 by joining ESPN as a football analyst.

He’d been serving in that role with the popular sports conglomerate ever since, even winning the “Outstanding Personality/Studio Analyst” award at the 2023 Emmy Awards.
Yet, according to The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand, ESPN has now decided to move on from Clark. It’s a decision that’s been met with a lot of opposition.
Social Media Divided on Ryan Clark’s Firing From ESPN
ESPN routinely reveals layoffs. It’s a part of the business. Those decisions can’t be easy, especially when so many families are impacted by the moves.
Yet, now Clark is the latest victim, and as Pittsburgh multimedia photojournalist Ed Thompson shared on X, many didn’t see this coming.
“Wow. Didn’t see this coming. Ryan is a good journalist when he sticks with sports and sports stories in my opinion.”
Meanwhile, Chat Sports’ Patriots Today host Brett Alper summed up his opinion with one word: “Deserved.”

One X user almost felt conflicted, admitting, “I love Ryan Clark as a player, but this is the right move from ESPN.”
Another user highlighted how the NFL on ESPN’s page on X shared a clip of a segment featuring Clark minutes after Marchand reported that the network has decided to part ways with him. The user wrote, “The timing on this LMAOOO ??”
In Marchand’s report, it was revealed that “Clark was on ESPN’s ‘NFL Live’ on Monday. He was informed of the decision during the show, said the sources, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive matter. Clark did not finish the program.”

While it may feel like being ousted from ESPN’s plans is a significant loss, one user was quick to point out how well Clark’s done for himself (over 510k followers on X alone) and that he’ll have no trouble staying successful on other platforms.
“Ryan Clark has built up enough of a platform that he will be ok. It suck’s to lose the ESPN machine behind him, but he will do just fine independently or if he contracts his brand to another platform.”
One user admits that they were “rooting for him” at ESPN.
Meanwhile, Dov Kleiman called the move “long overdue.” “𝗕𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚: ESPN has FIRED long-time analyst Ryan Clark, per The Athletic. A long overdue decision 👏”
The NFL community can’t seem to agree on whether ESPN should have moved on from the former NFL defensive back. Yet many believe he’ll still have no trouble earning a living analyzing football.
