With a chance to seal a series sweep on the road against the Houston Astros on Sunday, the Orioles turned to starter Brandon Young to set the tone to do so. Young did exactly that in a masterful start.
Young turned in seven efficient innings of work, allowing just one run on five hits and striking out seven batters. Most importantly, he kept his command in check for what was his best start in over a month.
What made the start that much more impressive was the fact that Young was not even slated to start on Sunday. Kyle Bradish had been lined up to pitch the series finale, but instead got flipped with Young, pushing his scheduled start to one day earlier.
That next-man-up mentality has had the Orioles thriving in what is now a season-high seven game win streak, their longest since 2023.
Baseball is a tricky sport known of being a very mental game. A compassionate clubhouse can elevate play on the field and individual success — recently, that has been transpiring for the Orioles on the diamond.
After he twirled a gem on Sunday, Young acknowledged the Orioles’ good feel for the game as a collective, citing the energy within the clubhouse as a factor in their winning stretch.
"The vibes have been good the whole year,” Young said, according to Jacob Calvin Meyer. “We're really not surprised that we're on a little heater right now.”
Young has enjoyed an excellent breakout season in Baltimore, blossoming into a consistent option atop the team’s rotation. In 16 starts this season, Young owns an 8-2 record to go with a 3.25 ERA.
"He's a dog out there. Everyone loves when he pitches,” said Orioles infielder Coby Mayo. “He pitches with such poise, and he's calm and doesn't let anything kind of hinder anything."
Sunday’s victory brought the Orioles to two games under .500 for the first time since June 5th, as they now sit just two games back of the third and final Wild Card spot.
The Orioles now head into what may be their most crucial series yet this season on Monday, when the team opens a three-game set against the Boston Red Sox on the road. Boston currently owns the longest winning streak in the league, absolutely striding with 13 consecutives wins.
Baltimore has their sights set on silencing their division rival.
"Job's not done,” Young said. “We got another game tomorrow, so we got to flush this one and get after the Red Sox."
