They face Spain in the 2026 World Cup final on Sunday, July 19 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Messi has been the star of the tournament. He leads the Golden Boot race with eight goals and broke the record for most World Cup goals all-time. He now has 21 goals across six tournaments.

The 39-year-old superstar has not gotten here on his own. He did not score in Argentina's last two matches, but did notch three assists. Lautaro Martínez stepped up with a goal in each fixture, Enzo Fernández scored the equalizer in the semifinals match against England, and Julián Alvarez and Alexis Mac Allister each netted a goal in the quarterfinals win over Switzerland.

Manager Lionel Scaloni will hope to put his best lineup together against a well-rounded Spain that features teenage sensation Lamine Yamal and clutch king Mikel Merino. Scaloni raised eyebrows when he removed veteran midfielder Rodrigo De Paul from his Starting XI against England. Messi's Inter Miami teammate joined the match in the second half.
