Y-D Red Sox blank Brewster Whitecaps in East Division battle

The Cotuit Kettleers are finally starting to put some wind in its sails after a slow start to the Cape Cod Baseball League season.

Cotuit (7-12-2) has won two straight games since ending a six-game losing streak as it beat the Harwich Mariners 8-4 on Thursday at Lowell Park.

Notre Dame’s Noah Coy (4-for-4, one home run, five RBIs, two runs) and Alabama-Birmingham’s Landon Beaver (1-for-5, two RBIs) erased an early 3-0 deficit with just two swings of the bat as two singles evened the score in the second inning.

Cotuit would go on to score eight unanswered runs behind 12 hits and five walks. JJ Moran (Stanford) went 3-for-4 with one walk, three runs and one RBI.

Adam McKelvey (Georgia Tech) settled in after giving up three runs in the first inning. He pitched three scoreless innings after that, allowing five hits and three walks total. He struck out four batters.

Colin Larson (Boston College) hit a leadoff home run as he went 2-for-3 with two walks, two runs and one RBI to pace Harwich (13-8). Brayden Jaksa (Oregon) was 3-for-5 with three RBIs.

Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox 5, Brewster Whitecaps 0

Yarmouth-Dennis (17-2-1) pitched its third shutout of the season as it blanked Brewster (13-7-1) in a battle of the top two teams in the East Division.

Cade O’Leary (Florida State) started on the bump for Yarmouth-Dennis and pitched four scoreless innings as he gave up just three hits and one walk against seven strikeouts. Nolan Bernard (South Florida) improved to a 1-0 record after he pitched two scoreless innings with two strikeouts, allowing one hit and one walk.

Brewster was held to six hits and five walks. Jay Abernathy was 2-for-3 with one walk.

Dante Vachini (Cal Poly) had himself a day at the plate for Yarmouth-Dennis. The leadoff man was 2-for-4 at the plate with a two-run home run, while he collected three RBIs and scored twice. He scored a run with a steal of home.

After giving Yarmouth-Dennis a two-run lead in the third inning, Vachini then hit a double to drive in another run, while Jake Souders (Samford) singled to make it 4-0 in the fifth inning.

Souders finished the game 2-for-4 with one double and one RBI for Yarmouth-Dennis, which has won three straight outings.
