Seattle Mariners Outfielder Named All-Star For 2nd-Straight Season

· Yahoo Sports

SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners had one of their most dominant offensive performances in an 11-0 win against the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday at T-Mobile Park.

The Mariners were a solo homer away from hitting a home run cycle as a team. The hardest homer to hit, a grand slam, was the first the team hit in the game.

That grand slam came courtesy of outfielder Randy Arozarena. His grand slam gave the M's a 5-0 lead.

Arozarena finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs, four RBIs and a walk and was a triple away from hitting for the cycle.

Just several hours after Arozarena hit his grand slam, he earned an incredible individual honor.

Arozarena was named an All-Star for the third time in his career and for the second consecutive season. He was named to the reserves as a substitute outfielder and was the only Seattle All-Star announced with the starters and reserves.

"I (feel) happiness," Arozarena said in a postgame interview Saturday via interpreter Freddy Llanos. "It's a recognition of all the hard work, all the discipline and everything you've put into it. Being able to be among the best, (I'm feeling) a little satisfied. ... Lets you know I'm in the right direction, everything I've been doing, it's paying off."

Arozarena is set to hit free agency after this season, and he'll likely command a big deal on the open market if he continues at his current pace.

The three-time All-Star is putting together a career-best season. He's slashing .287/.376/.453 with an .829 OPS in 82 games and has hit 21 doubles, a triple and nine home runs with 41 RBIs. He's also stolen 19 bases in 23 attempts.

Despite him being named a reserve, Arozarena is likely to start the All-Star game due to the starting outfielders all being out due to respective injuries. The Minnesota Twins' Byron Buxton (right hip impingement), New York Yankees' Aaron Judge (rib stress fracture) and Los Angeles Angels' Mike Trout (right hamstring strain) are all on the injured list due to their respective injuries.

The other outfielder reserves aside from Arozarena is the Yankees' Cody Bellinger and the Detroit Tigers' Riley Greene.

The Mariners will likely have more players named as reserves as players either opt out or are pulled out of the All-Star game but for now, Arozarena is set to be the only representative from the Pacific Northwest heading to the All-Star Game.

The Midsummer Classic is set to take place at 5 p.m. PT on July 14 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.
