MVP runner-up Drake Maye barely makes top 10 in PFF's QB rankings

New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye came in ninth in Pro Football Focus' ranking of all starting quarterbacks ahead of the 2026 NFL season.
That's a surprising falloff for a quarterback who placed second in the NFL MVP race behind Matthew Stafford in 2025.

Statistically, Maye had a solid sophomore season. He threw for 4,394 yards, 31 touchdowns, and eight interceptions in a year that he helped the Patriots go from a 4-13 record to 14-3. They won the AFC East division and advanced to the Super Bowl for the first time since the 2018 season.
PFF's Dalton Wasserman and Max Chadwick explained their rationale behind putting the quarterback in the ninth spot:
"Maye did a tremendous job attacking the perimeter all season. Including the postseason, he ranked fifth among qualifying quarterbacks in PFF passing grade on throws at or outside the numbers (89.6). He also ranked among the top five quarterbacks in yards per attempt, touchdown passes and completion percentage on those throws. Now, flanked by one of the NFL’s best perimeter weapons in A.J. Brown, Maye could be even more productive on outside throws this season."
The addition of Brown and veteran Romeo Doubs should give the Patriots one of their best receiving rooms in years. They have also improved the offensive line and added a new young tight end weapon with rookie third-round draft pick Eli Raridon.
There could be some regression due to the strength of schedule, but Maye has all of the tools to make it another special year for the Patriots.
