Get a loaf of bread for 99c at Boxer

· The South African

Did you know that, as of 1 July 2026, it is possible to get a loaf of bread for just 99c at Boxer Superstores across South Africa?

To qualify, shoppers must be an FNB Easy, Aspire, or Prime Life customer. They are eligible for one 99c loaf of bread every week.

FNB CEO Lytania Johnson said that this initiative is about helping customers reduce the cost of everyday living.

The model follows a similar deal that FNB made with Pick n Pay in 2024, which allowed qualifying customers to purchase loaves of bread for less than one rand.

As Nelson Mandela said at his inauguration, “Let there be work, bread, water and salt for all”.

The Boxer FNB 99c bread

The 99c bread option is available to both 600g bakery loaf white and brown bread sold in Boxer stores.

To qualify, use your FNB Easy Debit Card to pay for anything, of any amount, at a Boxer Superstore. This counts as one qualifying swipe, and you can qualify up to four times a month. Swipes are counted from Monday to Sunday.

If you qualify, you’ll get an SMS with a voucher code on your FNB-registered number. The code is valid for about a month from the date it’s sent, and the SMS will tell you the exact expiry date.

To redeem, wait for the cashier to scan your bread, then give them the code or read it out. The price of the 600g white or brown loaf then drops to 99c.

If you have more than one valid code, you can use them together to buy the same number of loaves.

So if you find yourself with three vouchers, that’s three loaves of bread.

Why this initiative between FNB and Boxer?

According to the Boxer press release on the topic, both the CEO of FNB and the CEO of Boxer, Marek Masojada, see the 99c bread initiative as a way to assist households facing financial pressures.

FNB CEO Lytania Johnson stated, “This benefit is grounded in us listening to our customers and understanding the real pressures they face, so we can focus our support where it delivers the most significant difference in their daily lives.”

She also states that Boxer’s rural and semi-rural footprint enabled the bank to serve customers across South Africa.

Marek Masojada mirrored these sentiments. He states: “FNB brings the deep customer insights and a clear understanding of the financial pressures that households face, while Boxer provides a trusted, accessible retail footprint rooted in communities across the country.”

They hope that this initiative will help many South Africans keep their food budgets in check while also accessing basic food items like bread.

99c bread at Pick n Pay

FNB and Pick n Pay launched their own 99c bread initiative in 2024. They report that this has led to the sale of 6.3 million loaves. Additionally, it has generated more than R9.6 million in direct savings for customers.

Bread ranks among South Africa’s most important staple foods, second only to maize meal as a source of daily energy in the national diet. It is cheap and consumed across income groups, making it a household essential for millions.

Its central place in the diet is why bread prices matter to ordinary consumers, especially in poorer households.

Given South Africa’s high unemployment figures, such initiatives are a welcome reprieve for many people.
