Per 64Analytics, Smith is the No. 233-ranked player in the portal. LSU will be Smith's third school in three years after he spent 2025 at TCU before transferring to USF in 2026.
With the Bulls, Smith appeared in 16 games and started eight. He pitched 46.2 innings with a 4.24 ERA. Smith struck out 52 and walked 25.
Smith, originally from Florida, should be a key piece of LSU's bullpen in 2027. Smith has experience starting games, and that versatility could come in handy, but LSU returns its entire starting rotation and help is needed in the bullpen. LSU relievers struggled to throw strikes in 2026 and Johnson needs a more consistent performance from that group in 2026.
