Every AFC East team's biggest reason for optimism in 2026
· Yahoo Sports
The AFC East division in the NFL is set up to be a super-competitive conference each season, but that doesn't always materialize. The New York Jets have entered the chat, and on many occasions, so have the Miami Dolphins. This season should be no different in the division, or at least that's what fans of these teams hope. Every team enters camp with a reason to compete. Let's look at each AFC East team's biggest reason for optimism heading into 2026.

Buffalo Bills - Josh Allen is one of the biggest advantages in the NFL
Whether Josh Allen has the firepower or weapons on the offensive side of the football, Buffalo fans know that every week, they will have an advantage at the quarterback position with one of the league's most dangerous players. Allen is a continuous staple at the top of Super Bowl aspirations. His ability to extend plays gives them an advantage every week. Few teams have this luxury of longevity as the Buffalo Bills have in Josh Allen. His consistency each season keeps him at an elite level and keeps the Bills in the hunt for a championship.
New York Jets - Improved through the draft, improved up front
Quarterback play is always at the forefront of an NFL franchise, but sometimes that memo must go to the Jets' spam folder. Geno Smith is closer to the end than the beginning, and New York doesn't necessarily have a concrete backup plan at QB. The offense will be better, but it may not happen this year. At least they will have an opportunity to develop chemistry for the future, right? The Jets had a great draft, but again, the future looks bright, not the short term.
New England Patriots - Will expectations from last year be reasonable this year?
The New England Patriots have a young roster that has managed to gel and mature way ahead of schedule, which is rare, but the team will have very high expectations to pick up where they left off, and that is with another Super Bowl appearance. They need more of a pass rush, more takeaways, and consistency to be able to exceed them. This season will be about not having to rely on winning shootouts to get back into the race for another franchise ring.
Miami Dolphins - Does the speed on offense still keep defenses up at night?
The speed isn't necessarily gone in Miami, but it definitely decreased a bit with the recent departures. The Dolphins have one of the best and wealthiest running backs in the game today with De'Von Achane, and Malik Willis will now take the reins of the franchise all to himself as a high-paid (nearly unproven) quarterback. Is a Super Bowl in the Dolphins' future? Probably not, but they could absolutely challenge for a Wild-Card spot in the AFC.
