Draft Grades: Thunder’s Selection of Bennett Stirtz at No. 16

The Oklahoma City Thunder entered the 2026 NBA Draft with plenty of flexibility, and after trading up one spot to 16, they made sure they landed their guy in Bennett Stirtz. It wasn’t the flashiest selection of the night, and it certainly wasn’t the highest upside swing on the board, but it was another pick that reflects exactly how Sam Presti has built a championship caliber roster.

At first glance, some fans may have been underwhelmed. Stirtz isn’t the elite athlete that jumps off the screen during workouts, nor is he viewed as a future superstar.
What he is, however, is one of the smartest basketball players in the draft. His feel for the game, decision making and ability to consistently make winning plays are traits that have become staples of Oklahoma City’s roster construction.
Stirtz arrives after a remarkable rise through the college ranks. He proved at every stop that he could adapt, improve and thrive against better competition. That journey says just as much about his work ethic as it does his talent.
Players who continually outperform expectations often fit well in Oklahoma City’s development system, and there’s every reason to believe the Thunder see even more growth ahead.
On the floor, the fit makes plenty of sense. Oklahoma City’s offense is built around ball movement, quick decisions and unselfish basketball. Stirtz excels in each of those areas.
He’s comfortable operating in the pick-and-roll, plays with excellent pace and doesn’t need the ball in his hands to impact winning. That makes him an ideal complementary piece alongside stars like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren.
Another reason to like the selection is the confidence the Thunder showed in making it. Oklahoma City surrendered two second-round picks to move up from 17 to 16, signaling they believed another team was preparing to draft Stirtz.
When a front office with Oklahoma City’s recent draft history identifies a player it doesn’t want to lose, it’s worth paying attention. The Thunder have earned the benefit of the doubt when it comes to talent evaluation.
Still, there are reasons this pick falls just short of earning an A.
The Thunder already have one of the deepest backcourts in the NBA, which means Stirtz could face an uphill battle for immediate playing time. His path into the rotation won’t be easy, especially on a roster fresh off another championship run.
There’s also the question of his long term ceiling. While his basketball IQ is elite, he doesn’t possess the overwhelming athletic tools or physical upside that some of the other prospects available at 16 offered.
Ultimately, this feels like another classic Sam Presti selection. Instead of chasing raw potential, the Thunder prioritized intelligence, competitiveness and a player whose game complements the stars already in place.
Stirtz may never become a household name, but if he develops into a reliable rotation guard who consistently helps winning basketball, this selection will age extremely well.
For now, a B+ feels like the right grade. It isn’t a home run swing, but it’s a smart, calculated pick that fits Oklahoma City’s identity and could pay dividends for years to come.
