However, there was some really unsavory behavior emanating from the galleries at Shinnecock on Saturday as Clark went about his business.
The 32-year-old is looking to win his second US Open Championship this week.
And the way that Wyndham Clark has played this week, it seems very likely that he will leave Shinnecock Hills with another US Open title to his name.

However, he has worked really hard to turn around the public’s perception of him.
In spite of that, there are plenty of fans who simply cannot warm to him.
That said, there is never any excuse for abusing golfers midway through their rounds.
Wyndham Clark abused by fan at the US Open in ‘disgusting’ incident
While Clark was grinding hard on the golf course on Saturday, he was forced into dealing with some ‘disgusting’ abuse from one fan at Shinnecock.
One fan at Shinnecock Hills clearly took things too far.
Golf journalist Brendan Porath took to his X account to share what he heard one fan shout in Clark’s direction.

“‘Bad day to be a locker, Wyndham!’, was shouted very loud and clearly as he walked into the bunker to play his shot.“
Mac Webster, a fan following Clark’s group at Shinnecock, replied to Porath, saying: “It was disgusting. Unbecoming stuff from the Long Island crowd.“
Golf’s governing bodies must come down hard on abuse from fans
Abusing players mid-round is becoming far too prevalent in professional golf nowadays.
While Clark may not be the most popular player in the world, he definitely doesn’t deserve the kind of abuse that he received at Shinnecock on Sunday.
Golfing authorities need to clamp down on this kind of behavior as a matter of urgency.
Banning orders should be imposed for any fan seen abusing the players during their rounds.
Wyndham Clark did incredibly well to retain his focus despite receiving completely unnecessary abuse from one fan.
That certainly would not have been easy for him. Hopefully, he is not subjected to much of the same at Shinnecock Hills on Sunday.
