The Boston Red Sox are reportedly in the market for a right-handed bat, but they can cross one name off their list.
MLB insider Buster Olney recently reported that the Red Sox are pursuing right-handed hitters on the trade market. Although their record is not great, the American League is relatively weak this year and Craig Breslow, on multiple occasions, has said the team is not punting on the season.
They still have a few weeks to claw themselves back into the wild card race and become buyers at the deadline. Jeremy Peña of the Houston Astros could have been a perfect addition to the Red Sox, but according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the Astros are not interested in dealing him.
"The Houston Astros have told teams that they are wasting their time asking about shortstop Jeremy Peña and first baseman Christian Walker," wrote Nightengale on Sunday. "They may be a sub-.500 team, but plan to be buyers at the deadline, not sellers, in a division in which only the Seattle Mariners are above .500. They are searching for bullpen help and a left-handed hitting outfielder."
The Astros seem to be thinking along the same lines as the Red Sox. They do not want to sell at the deadline, even though Peña would fetch them a haul. He is an All-Star, Gold Glover and World Series MVP. He has a .284/.345/.452 slash line and six home runs this season.
