After finally reaching the top of his division, some voices have suggested that Gaethje should call it a career and go out while he’s still at the peak of his powers.
Even at 37, Gaethje has built a legacy as one of the most exciting fighters to ever compete in the Octagon, regardless of what happens next.
Gaethje had previously said that fighting in 2026 wasn’t part of his plan. However, more recently, he mentioned that he still intends to return as lightweight champion.
If Justin Gaethje is serious about coming back, the UFC would have plenty of options for who could welcome him back into the Octagon. He never faced Dustin Poirier again after losing to him back in 2018 when both were still rising up through the ranks.
A second fight between them would no doubt get fans excited. There was also talk about a third meeting with Michael Chandler before Gaethje retired for good. But most likely, there would be calls for a title defence first – something he has never done despite holding interim gold twice during his career.

Arman Tsarukyan has spent a while waiting for his first UFC title shot, and he’s made it clear that Justin Gaethje is the one he wants next. With Charles Oliveira also in the mix, Gaethje has plenty of options in front of him as the lightweight champion.
Recently, Joe Rogan asked ‘The Highlight’ whether he thought he would return to the cage after such a memorable win.
“Right now, I’m planning on it,” said Gaethje. “There’s not something natural in me that feels like it’s over. So, that’s all I can say.”
Rogan later suggested that Tsarukyan might be next, pointing out his strong position within the division at the moment.
“Yeah, he is definitely the guy that’s up… I agree,” replied Gaethje before admitting, “No, I can’t say I have a name” when pressed on whether Tsarukyan would be his next fight.
