A three-star recruit and the state’s 15th-ranked prospect in the 2027 class according to 247Sports, Matthews announced earlier Monday he would choose between Maryland and UNLV.
The 6-foot, 200-pound running back holds 11 offers from Division-I schools, and it all began with North Texas in January 2025.
That came before a stellar junior season in which Matthews led Class 5A Carl Albert to a 14-0 record, its fourth consecutive state title and 20th championship overall, passing Ada for the most in state history.
Matthews, who is No. 20 on The Oklahoman's initial Super 30 rankings of the state's top 2027 recruits, finished with 254 carries for 2,033 yards and a school-record 44 rushing touchdowns. He also had three passing scores and was named the Gatorade Oklahoma Player of the Year.
Later in the school year, Matthews helped the Carl Albert basketball team reach the Class 5A title game and led the Titans with 10.7 points per game.
Matthews was named The Oklahoman’s 2025-26 All-City Boys Athlete of the Year during its banquet Thursday at the Young Family Athletic Center in Norman.
