Kentucky Wildcats News: UK eyes J Batt as next Athletic Director
· Yahoo Sports
Happy Sunday, Big Blue Nation. The biggest news surrounding Kentucky athletics on Saturday centered around the future leadership of the athletic department.
Multiple reports indicate that Kentucky is zeroing in on Michigan State athletic director J Batt as the leading candidate to replace Mitch Barnhart, who is set to retire in late June after 24 years as the Wildcats’ athletic director.

Barnhart’s tenure at Kentucky has been one of the most successful in school history. Since taking over in 2002, he has overseen numerous facility upgrades, coaching hires, conference championships, and national titles while helping position Kentucky as one of the premier athletic departments in the country.
Now, attention has turned toward who will guide the department into the future.
Batt has quickly emerged as a popular name due to his reputation as one of the top fundraisers in college athletics. Before taking over at Michigan State in 2025, Batt served as athletic director at Georgia Tech, where he helped increase fundraising efforts, improve facilities, and generate new revenue streams for the Yellow Jackets.
His background also includes key leadership roles at Alabama, where he helped oversee major fundraising initiatives and athletic department operations during one of the most successful eras in Crimson Tide history.
If Kentucky ultimately hires Batt, it would signal the university’s desire to remain aggressive in an ever-changing college athletics landscape. With NIL, revenue sharing, and facility investments becoming increasingly important, many believe Batt’s fundraising expertise could be a major asset.
While nothing is official yet, all eyes will remain on Lexington as Kentucky moves closer to selecting the next leader of its athletic department.
