Group E brings together Germany, Ecuador, Ivory Coast and Curacao, with Julian Nagelsmann’s side looking to play their first World Cup knockout game since winning the 2014 final.

Germany should have enough to take control, yet recent failures, injuries and selection questions make them harder to trust than usual.

Ecuador and Ivory Coast both look capable of competing for top spot, while Curacao arrive with the best story in the group. The smallest nation ever to reach a World Cup will not lack romance, but the football challenge is huge.

Germany

Germany have to perform after two dreadful World Cup campaigns. They went out in the group stage in both 2018 and 2022, which is miles below the standard expected of them.

There are concerns around the squad. Jamal Musiala and Kai Havertz have had injury-hit seasons, Florian Wirtz has not had his smoothest year, and Lennart Karl is now set to miss the tournament.

Nagelsmann also has big decisions to make in midfield and defence, with Joshua Kimmich expected to play at right-back and tuck inside. Anything but passage through to the next round will be met with uproar from the German fans.

Ecuador

Ecuador will be a popular dark-horse pick, and there is a good reason for that. They finished second in South American qualifying and built their campaign on an outstanding defensive record.

The spine of the team looks strong. Willian Pacho and Piero Hincapie give them real quality at the back, while Moises Caicedo provides athleticism and control in front of the defence.

The concern is at the other end. Enner Valencia remains the obvious source of goals, but the next highest scorer for his country in the squad has scored eight, and the next highest is a centre-back on three goals.

Ecuador can keep games tight, but they need enough final-third threat to make that count.

Ivory Coast

Ivory Coast’s qualifying campaign was excellent, going unbeaten across 10 matches and not conceding a single goal.

That defensive record alone makes them dangerous, but there is also pace, power and direct threat in wide areas. Simon Adingra, Yan Diomande and Amad Diallo are players who can carry the ball and hurt teams quickly.

The question is whether they have a natural finisher to turn good performances into wins. Their goals were spread around in qualifying, which can be a strength, but it also leaves them without one obvious focal point.

Curacao

Curacao are one of the great stories of this World Cup. With a population of around 185,000, they are the smallest nation ever to reach the tournament.

Dick Advocaat’s role only adds to the story. This is another chapter in a remarkable managerial career, and simply getting Curacao here is already a major achievement.

The difficulty is obvious. Germany, Ecuador and Ivory Coast all have more depth, more athleticism and more top-level experience. Curacao will need organisation, discipline and probably a little chaos to take anything from this group.

Predicting Group E at the World Cup

As brilliant as Curacao’s story truly is, they are in a group with three sides who will have aspirations of a deep run. They will be bottom, Germany will top the table, and it’s going to be tight for second place.

For many, Ecuador are a team who can cause a real shock this summer, but I think Ivory Coast have the better players in forward areas. I’ll have them ahead of the South Americans, but it will be tight.
