Dayton Tockey blasted walk-off home run vs. No. 2 Georgia Tech

The hero-defining moment came in the Atlanta Regional when OU faced the No. 2 national seed Georgia Tech on June 1.

The Sooners had lost four straight series heading into the NCAA tournament with little chance of advancing. In a do-or-die game against Georgia Tech, Oklahoma had a late rally to overcome a 4-run deficit and send the game to extra innings.

Tockey was hitting .232 in the season and eighth on the lineup when he was up at the bottom of the 10th. With a full count, Tockey launched a 454-foot bomb in dead center field. In a huge upset, Tockey became the hero that advanced OU to the Super Regionals.

Dayton Tockey's journey to OU from JUCO

The senior first baseman transferred to Oklahoma from Weatherford Community College last year and has experienced a journey full of highs and lows since.

He started off the 2025 season strong, batting a .271 average before suffering a serious ankle injury that put him out for the rest of the regular season.

Tockey was not the star of the 2026 season either. He went 0-for-11 in March and was hitting a .196 when he was in and out of the lineup.

He hit only three home runs during the regular season. The other five came during the Sooners’ regional and Super Regional matchups.

Dayton Tockey's mom sports a TOCKEY Hat

Almost as recognizable as Tockey himself on social media and television is his mother, Kristi Gilpin.

Gilpin is spotted at nearly every OU baseball game wearing a white trucker hat with “TOCKEY” in bold, capital letters facing the front.

Cameras often capture Gilpin's emotional rollercoaster while watching her son play. Her tears of joy during Tockey's moment of magic against Georgia Tech quickly went viral.

You can expect to see her on the College World Series broadcast.
